The dbx 286S is a single-channel microphone preamplifier and channel strip processor that combines a studio-grade preamp with four stages of dynamics and tonal processing in one rack unit. It suits engineers who need a polished vocal or spoken-word signal ready for the desk, interface or transmitter without patching together separate outboard units.

Signal flow runs from the mic preamp through a program-adaptive expander/gate, classic dbx compression, a frequency-tunable de-esser and an enhancer, with an insert jack for adding an external processor at the point in the chain where you need it. Switchable +48V phantom power feeds condenser microphones directly, and precision detented controls make settings repeatable across sessions or between operators in a shared rack. A full complement of meters and status LEDs keeps gain structure, gate activity and compression visible at a glance.
