The venue

The Evangelical Formosan Church of Central Auckland is a purpose-built, two-level church in Epsom. It was designed from the outset to do more than host Sunday services: the building is used for youth development, education programmes and performances, so the audio and video systems had to work for a congregation, a classroom and a stage.

The brief

A complete audio and visual installation with multiple rooms and zoning for both sound and video. On the audio side, the system needed to cover services and performances, with the ability to select different audio sources in each of the seven rooms. On the video side, the church wanted two main projectors, a video monitor and six flat-panel displays, each able to show its own content, all managed from a single video operations desk.

Audio design

Church audio is speech-first: the spoken word has to reach the back row cleanly, without feedback and without the operator fighting the room. The main hall was designed for intelligible speech with enough headroom for live music and performances. The remaining rooms were set up as independent zones, so a youth group can run its own programme in one space while a service continues in the main hall, each room choosing its own source.

Video design

Two main projectors serve the primary worship space, with a video monitor and six flat-panel televisions distributed through the building. Rather than a tangle of separate players, every display is fed from one video operations desk, and each screen can carry its own content: lyrics and scripture in the hall, a live feed in an overflow room, or a presentation in a classroom.

Keeping it usable for volunteers

Churches run on volunteers, and the best system is the one they can operate confidently. The design keeps day-to-day operation simple: choose a source for a room, bring up the right microphones, send content to the right screen. The complexity lives in the rack, not on the desk.
